My ultimate plan for being in Kenya is to share the reality of Christ's love with the people I meet by giving up self to serve them. I also plan to use my technical skills to equip the students and staff at MITS with knowledge that will assist in empowering them to rise above poverty.
My specific plans are to:
1. Teach English using journalism as a basis.
- This skill is important for leadership in the church and community, for communication with supporters and for furthering the ministry. I would like to develop an employee newsletter among business associates, school newspaper among students and ultimately perhaps a community newsletter. These publications will provide tangible experience and allow the students and staff to realize why it is important to have good written English skills.
2. Tutor students.
- Being able to work one-on-one with students needing extra help will enable greater success at learning the core concepts of their classwork.
3. Mentor students about to graduate from MITS.
- I will help them develop resumes, practice interviewing skills and search for jobs. I will also help to develop a system to keep in contact with the graduates of MITS.
4. Work with staff members as we minister to children and adults still living in the streets.
- I am learning Kiswahili to enable better communication regardless of people’s English proficiency. Working in the streets will enable me to help spread God’s message to those who are living there as well as being able to help find new students to join MITS.
5. Encourage and advise team members and students who operate small businesses.
- The businesses provide students with skills training. I will help them develop better written and oral communication plans to enhance their productivity. I will also help them develop marketing plans for better success of their businesses.
